The cloud is dead. The return of hardware servers.

#engineering#future-thoughts#cloud#aws#azure

The cloud (Azure, AWS, GCP) solved a problem that plagued us from the early ’90s through the late 2000s: getting new code onto a server. That meant maintaining licenses, keeping the OS updated, fighting slow internet upload speeds, and asking the one person in charge of it all to get it there.

The cloud solved that, all the way down to Lambdas and Functions that concentrate only on the CRUD operations. You don’t even have to think about how the HTTP handlers really work. Just write your business logic and watch it scale.

But now, with AI, I’m not sure that’s really needed. The cloud solved a problem for people, but who really wants to pay Microsoft for something my agents can do for me? Why should I care about saving time by having a cloud provider do anything? My agents are already instructing these environments. The savings are gone.

Now I want to figure out which language is the most efficient, running on the best hardware I can afford to rent. I don’t care what the coding syntax looks like, because agents are the new interpreter.
